I need to lose 30-40 pounds and I haven't really exercised except for walking (slowly) in the last five years. Does bicycling work to lose weight? I live in a flat area of the country with very little hills. How fast and how many miles per day would I need to ride in order to get a good workout. Is bicycling a good way to get a good cardiovascular workout?
Honest opinions are appreciated.

Building muscle through resistance training is the best way to lose weight.

If that is not an option, cardio will work but it will take longer and your diet will need to be fine tuned.
IMO, jogging is the best cardio. Even if you only go slightly faster than walking, jogging is difficult and efficient at raising your heart rate and metabolism. If you have bad knees or don't like jogging then biking will have to do.
Whatever cardio you decide on, go for at least a half an hour and when finished take ten minutes for cooling down.
